The Rancher and Carrie Ann by Stevie MacFarlane

Editing: Keriann McKenna

Blurb

Carrie Ann Meadows is a dreamer, a bit of a schemer, and the prettiest girl in Centerville. If she’d get her nose out of those damn dime novels now and then, she might realize that standing right in front of her is a flesh and blood man willing to do his best to turn her highly unlikely romantic notions into reality.

It's not until Micah MacPherson stealthy purchases one of those books that he realizes he’s a far cry from the kind of man his Carrie Ann is dreaming about. He’s a rancher who has little time for courting a woman as it is. He doesn’t own fancy cravats, he can’t quote poetry, and he sure as hell isn’t on some social registry for highfalutin fops and dandies.

Micah loves Carrie Ann and he’s waited for her to grow up, but his patience is nearly at its end. She’s either going to marry him, or he’ll be pleased to give her what she so richly deserves and set his sights elsewhere. Surely somewhere there’s a woman who would appreciate a hard-working and devoted rancher with his eye on marriage.

Spicy Excerpt

“Kiss me, Carrie Ann,” he ordered softly.

No, that couldn’t be right, she thought fuzzily.

“Kiss me right now or I’m going to sit right down on this porch and spank the daylights out of you,” he ordered sternly.

Despite her life-long determination never to bow to any man, she found herself leaning closer. Her tongue ran across her lips, her mouth suddenly quite parched. She wondered if his was dry as well and slowly pressed her mouth to his.

For a second she froze, waiting for something awful to happen, but it didn’t. No, somehow it was delightful, the warmth of his mouth against hers, even on such a hot day. Her tongue slipped out again and his met it. Swiftly she pulled it back and gasped.

He didn’t say a word. He appeared to be waiting for her to say something, but she found she couldn’t speak. Again she pressed her lips to his and this time he let her slide down to the stair, moving one hand to cradle the back of her head. His fingers slid into her hair. Then the kiss was his to give.

For a fleeting moment she tried to remember if any of her novels described anything remotely like this. Then she struggled to find her own words to describe it. She’d have to remember this, she needed to remember this for her manuscript, and then she couldn’t think at all as his mouth gently nudged hers open.

There was no battle for supremacy. No rapier struggle to see who was mightier. It was clearly him. She was grateful his strong arms were supporting her or she might have melted into a puddle on the porch.

Breathing was difficult; his hot breath stole hers away as she sagged in his arms. If they made noise, she couldn’t hear it for her heartbeat seemed to have rushed to her ears. This was it then, she thought. This was the little death, for surely she would not survive this. And worse, she didn’t care.

Her breasts seemed quite large suddenly and she felt her nipples harden painfully, crushed against his chest as they were. There was a feeling of heaviness in her tummy she’d never experienced before, and for some reason pushing against him made it feel better.

Something hard pressed back and Micah groaned into her mouth and pulled her closer. The kiss changed. There was a sudden desperation on both of their sides, as though fate would somehow put a stop to this alluring pleasure and she cried out as well, softly, breathlessly, not recognizing her own voice.

“Micah,” she finally whispered. “Micah, what’s happening to us,” she breathed helplessly.
